Dark Mode: Design Considerations

More Than Flipping Colors
Dark mode isn't just white-on-black. Done lazily it looks harsh and hard to read. Done well it feels modern, comfortable, and easy on the eyes in low light.
Get the Foundations Right
- **Avoid pure black** — a very dark gray is easier on the eyes
- **Avoid pure white text** — slightly dimmed text reduces glare
- **Keep enough contrast** for readability without harshness
- **Adjust your accent colors** — bright ones can vibrate on dark backgrounds
Mind Images and Shadows
Shadows barely show on dark backgrounds, so use subtle borders or lighter surfaces to separate elements. Images with white backgrounds can look like glowing boxes — handle them deliberately.
Give Users Control
Respect the device's system preference by default, but let people switch manually and remember their choice. Don't force a mode on anyone.
Test in Real Conditions
Check your dark mode on real screens in both bright and dim rooms. What looks great on your monitor at night may be unreadable on a phone in daylight.
